Volunteer Members Info
What can I do?
Hand Up is always in need of members/donors/sponsors/
In the field (concerned citizen) and especially a volunteer associated with HUE learn to distinguish between real homeless people of need and con-artists. Don't get hood winked into giving someone money or outlaying money on their behalf. Never ever pay a motel or hotel bill (in advance or back due). Using your personal credit card places you responsible for damages of the room.
Chik Filet has a corporate policy they will feed the homeless. Rarely will a legitimate homeless person be hungry. There is nothing wrong if you see someone who fits the criteria of legitimate homeless - kindly offer food and to place a telephone call on their behalf. HUE can assist with clothes and additional needs (OTC meds, shoes, sleeping bags, tents, carry wagon, backpacks) are handled on a case by case basis.
Always remember: Children SHOULD NEVER be used as props. IMMEDIATELY PHONE THE POLICE. Be prepared to give a description and remain at a safe distance. Animals should never be used as props. If you see someone using an animal as a prop look for a water bowl. See if the animal is afforded shade. Call the police if you suspect abuse.
Experienced scammers employ every technique in the book to garner sympathy. If you give cash once they will remember you. Some can become aggressive and follow and harass you. IMMEDIATELY CALL THE POLICE NON EMERGENCY NUMBER 334-347-1211.
Most importantly BE OBSERVANT as you go about your daily activities. If you are certain you spot a homeless individual, approach cautiously, rarely does a legitimate homeless person approach. They are shamed of their circumstances.
All of us must work together to deter scammers from exploiting our citizens. There are legitimate people of need and we have a responsibility to them. HUE has a vision to offer comfort stations and temporary housing. Please support us in our efforts.
